illegal to drive golf cart

Whether you’re a long-time resident or just visiting Myrtle Beach, you may be looking for an easy way to get around the beachfront. Regular street traffic, especially in the summer, is subject to inexplicable slowness and no one wants to spend their vacation stuck in a car. For that reason, Golf Carts are a common means of transportation around the beach. But it’s all too easy to get complacent with such a means of transport, and that can lead to unwanted tickets. With that in mind, here are the things you should know when operating a golf cart in the Myrtle Beach area.

Who Can Operate A Golf Cart?
Anyone operating a golf cart must be a licensed driver of at least sixteen years of age who has their current driver’s license in their possession while operating the golf cart. Some rental agencies may insist the licensed operator be at least twenty-one years of age, and it is within their rights as rental agents to do so.

Where Can a Golf Cart be Driven?
A golf cart may only be operated on a street for which the posted speed limit is thirty-five miles an hour (35mph) or less and only within up to four (4) miles of the address on the registration certificate or the rental property at which you are staying.

While a golf cart cannot be driven on a street with an excess of thirty-five miles an hour, it may cross a highway or street at an intersection where the cross street exceeds the thirty-five-mph limit.

When Can a Golf Cart Be Driven?
A golf cart cannot be driven after dark. This generally means that you should not plan to go anywhere until at least at least thirty minutes after dawn and that you should have your golf cart home at least thirty minutes before dusk.

Any Other Regulations I Should Know?
All golf carts must have a registration certificate issued by the department of motor vehicles.

It should be noted that some HOAs and local communities may have additional regulations about where and how golf carts can be driven, so be sure to obey all posted signs.

What Can Happen If I Get a Ticket?
Any person found in violation of any of the above regulations will be ticketed, and if convicted, can be penalized with a fine of up to one hundred dollars or by imprisonment for up to thirty days.
